Practice Teaching at the Elementary School

Spring 2017, I was taking one of my educational course requirements, which is ED 392 Practicum with Professor S. Moses. In this course, we usually developed lesson plans, and went to the Palikir Elementary School and delivered the lessons to the students. Therefore, before we actually going out to the Elementary School we had learned some different kinds of strategies for teaching in which they enable us to succeed during our teaching sessions.
However these are the pictures of  Palikir Elementary School building and the picture of my students and as well as my master teacher.

By taking this class I've been learned and experienced about the important of teaching. It was a challenging, creative, and meaningful way to help kids see their own potential and to imagine possibilities they might otherwise not imagine.

Therefore,  being with the students  and help them learn and think about new ideas makes my heart happy. I strongly believe in my heart that I could make a difference in a child's life. Most importantly , as a future teacher  I wanted to be a positive influence in their life in both the classroom and outside the classroom or in the real world.  I really wanted to be there to support them academically in extra-curriculum activities.  I will do my best to teach the students to make an impact and open up their eyes to all the possibilities that are out there.

Some people believe that you can become a teacher if you had a degree in business, nursing, or etc. But I actually disagree. Becoming a teacher you must have specific skills to be success.

As matter of fact, every child can be succeed when matched with a wonderful teacher.
So what I want is to become that wonderful teacher, so the students could be successful. Especially because we all know that there is nothing more personally or professionally fulfilling than when the product of our work is a child's academic or society growth.

Two Things Chuukese Value the Most

With in the Chuukese culture, there were some things that they value as their tradition. Therefore, two of them were, The Love Sticks, and the Devil Mask. Chuukese value these two things for some reasons that they used them in the past. However until now they still value them because they represent who they are.

                                                   The Love Stick

Traditionally, young men would own personalized wooden love-sticks on which they would carve two of the same design. A short one would be carved to be utilized for his hair, the long one would be for the woman. When a man likes a woman, he uses the long love-stick to poke into her hut or hair. If the love-stick's design is that of the man she likes, she will pull the love-stick signaling for him to come in. If the woman pushes the love-stick out, it means she is not interested in the man.
The Devil Mask

The story of the Devil Mask originates from a long time ago. On the island of Tol, there lived a legendary ghost that kept stealing food from the starving people. As a result, the people decided to carve a devil mask to scare the ghost away. Later on, it happened in such a way that all the people came together and wore the mask. When the ghost came to their place to steal food, it saw devils surrounding the area. The ghost got scared, ran away, and never came back.

Therefore, in my opinion, I think that if it wasn't for this beautiful mask, the people of Chuuk would be starving or lack of local food now a days. But instead, the island of Chuuk now is also one of the most rich island of local food. in the Federated State of the Micronesia. So a great thanks to those genius who came up with this idea by creating their own devil mask just to scared away the ghost. And also it's really a good because the ghost left and never returns.

ED 334 Students Best Discussion About a Wonderful Classroom Management

The ED 334 students discussed about what classroom rules should be like and how to develop them and this is how it goes. The classroom rules should be posted on the walls where the students could easily see. Should focus on the ways students interact with others. The teacher should always enforce the rules, and limit the number of the rules (3-5) so it will be easy for the students to remember. They also discuss on how do develop classroom rules. Like classroom rules must be establish at the beginning of the school year. When creating your rules, ask for students' assistance, and most importantly  the rules should state concisely and positively. For example, instead of saying "No fighting" you can say "respect each others".
After the discussion about the rules, there was a discussion about logical consequences. A logical consequence is the term effective teachers used in classroom management to avoid punishment in the classroom. We must avoid punishment because it does not increase students’ responsibility; instead it increases evasion and deception. So consequences are the better way to use in our classroom, because they reinforce the internal requirements of self-control and commitment, and help children learn alternative ways to behave. Therefore, they do not hurt or humiliate the students, and they also do not respond to character, and are not meant to make the students feel bad. So, there are three types of logical consequences in which they happen when the rules are broken. These logical consequences are time out or time owed, loss of privilege, and fixed the damage.

Time Out
Ex. During class, Tatiana always makes a snide remark about another student's response to a question.
Tatiana may asked to leave the scene, "take a break" by sitting by herself facing the wall. She may returns when she appears to have regained control and is ready to participate in a positive way.

Loss of Privilege
Ex. During class, two students are talking instead of working even after clearly being told to stop talking.
They have to sit by themselves.

Fix the Damage
Ex. A student hurts the feelings of another student.
That student will apologize to the person she hurts

Second part was about Routines and Procedures
Routines and Procedures, define as the wide variety of skills and techniques to keep students, organized, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during class. However, there are two characteristics under routines/procedures which are, instructional routines/procedures and managerial routines/procedures.
Instructional routines are the routines teachers use during instructional activities
Ex. For getting the students' attention.
Hand signal
Raising your hand and say listen, freeze until you get all the students' attention

Managerial routines are the routines teachers use in between learning activities (transition)
Ex. Using the restroom
Restroom pass

When teaching routines/procedures you should set the goals by stating what you expect students to do. Explain, by stating, explaining, modeling and demonstrate the routines/procedure. Rehearse and practice them under your supervision. And last but not least, reinforcing the routines/procedures until they become the students' habit.

                                                                     To Be Continue....

ED 334 Worshop

Summer 2017 ED 334 students were making a workshop about Classroom Management at Nett Elementary School. This workshop had been prepared and delivered to the Pis-corps volunteer from the four states in the Federated State of Micronesia and their host teachers at Nett  Elementary School.

PE Class

PE - Is education through the body, of the body, and about the body.

Most of the local school in here in the Micronesia did not have PE class in their schools. Therefore according to my experiences or my sources, I strongly recommended that we should provide PE class in our schools for so many reasons.

Summer 2017 Micronesian future teachers who are attending COM-FSM, were taking PE class with Dr. Santos. In this class, we've learned so much about Physical Education. Most importantly is that we explored and demonstrated the three skill themes which are, loco-motor skills, manipulative skills, and non-manipulative skills.
We made lesson plans and practice delivered them with our classmates.
However we had been learned so much from this PE class, in which we couldn't wait to share in our own schools to help students more active in their learning.

We even explored some ASAP that they were so interesting, One of my favorite ASAP was the "Superhero Tag"
The "Its" (Villains) try to find the superheroes' true identities
3-4 people are "villains" (turn backs)
Two people are identified (secretly) as superheroes.
Villains will tag as many players as possible
if-tagged-freeze
Superheroes move and unfreeze those who have been tagged by touching them
The game will ends when the Villains guess the superheroes true identities.

Fine Art Methods Class

In class with Dr. Olah we were working in groups. Each group had been assigned to a benchmark to create a music lesson plan. After preparing the lesson plan, each group delivered their lesson to the class. However, group two had been assigned to benchmark
3.2. In which students will know the uses of specific music in daily or specific events, sing and play using music from different cultures, and describe the types of music present in various cultures.

Group two were teaching a song that Pohnpeian usually sing during constitution day. The title of this song is "Pohnpei Ahi Wasahn". However, this is how they teach the song. First they pass out copies to the students and then they had the students listen while they were singing the song slowly until the end. And then they sang it again and had the students to sing along. They repeated it until the students know the song.
After that, they divided the students into group of 3 and assigned each chorus to each group. Each group practice singing their parts for 5 minutes and then they stand up and sing their part to the whole class. Therefore, this is group 3 (Lins, Pel, Chrisy and sdjf), they sang the last part of the song.
Play the video to check out their amazing voices.

A Father of a 6 Months Old Baby Girl Who Disappeared From His Ship in the Papua New Guinea Sea

There was a cousin of mine name Bonifasio "Felino" Setik. He was working on one of the Japanese fishing vessel which is Taiyo Pohnpei. He has been working on that ship for  two and half years. Last year he got engaged to a Mortlockese woman, and later they both had a beautiful 6 months old baby girl. On the month of May this year was the last time to see his family before heading back out into the ocean again.
On June 08, 2017, families were informed by the company Felino worked for that he was lost at sea . On June 07, 2017,  Taiyo Pohnpei was anchoring somewhere near  Papua New Guinea and the crew were cleaning on deck and as well as the side port and starboard of the ship. During lunch time, the crew wrapped up and went back inside the ship except Felino and  one of the Pohnpeian guys. They were staying outside for a while until the other guy told Felino to go on in with him to have their lunch, Felino replied, he will be in shortly, So, the other guy left him. During lunch time, when they were all gathered for lunch, they realized that Felino was not among the crew. So during that moment they start looking for him around the ship, above and below deck, but he was no where to be found. Later on, they even send out their helicopters to search the ocean as well as other ships in the area to help with the search. They search for weeks and he was no where to be found. So, until now they really don't know what exactly happen to him.

A week later, the family decided to rest his soul in peace. So they sail out in the Pohnpeian sea and prayed for him. We might say our goodbyes, but it doesn't mean forever or the end. It simply means we'll miss you until we meet again.. Therefore, only God knows what exactly happened during that day, so our faith in god is the only cure for our deepest grief  that will help us learn to go on without you.
The family had grown very fond of you. Our love for you had becomes memories in which will be treasured forever and ever..
We loved you so much, and God loves you even more. God has you in His arms, and we have you in our hearts.
You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
Your life was a blessing, and we love you and thank you for everything you've done. And most of all, you will be forever in our hearts.
Love:
 Your families.

EDUCATION

EDUCATION IS THE GOLDEN KEY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND TO OPEN THE DOOR OF FREEDOM

Education is the foundation of our democracy.  So as future teacher I am always looking forward to  persuade this field because as we can see today that our society are very poor in education,  So as a future teacher I will offer a future full of personally and socially productive opportunities rather than continuing drugs addiction, and gang involvement. I will be there with my students and always remind them that someone did care about them and their future. As matter of fact it is ultimately through how our teachers teach and our parents parent that our states and global future will be determine.

Nepotism

Please help ED 251 students, future teachers in Micronesia to stop nepotism in our schools. We all want our generation to be acad...
